Man this one took me back to 10th grade geometry class, which I failed. This is a chip carving of a dutch mangle board. Measures about 5x22ish

John,

That looks great. You might have failed geo. but it looks like you are getting passing grades with designing!

Very nice, and even nicer now that I know what a mangle board is!

Google is your friend. (http://www.oldandinteresting.com/antique-irons-smoothers-mangles.aspx) :)

Ha, I had to look it up too, I thought it was Shop Talk, till I saw the photo

“Mangle Board” --- to spoil, or make incoherent especially through ineptitude,
a perfectly Good Story about a really nice piece of Red Oak mangled beyond recognition by a fellow worker.

Thanks for Sharing it with us

Wow! How beautiful that is?

Do I interpret correctly that a mangle stick was originally a spanking board? I would suspect someone would make a device of torture so pretty only to establish that it wasn't used for that purpose in their household, or that they were really sadistic and proud of their authority to use it.

Glad I didn't know what one was. Have known what a willow switch was used for though.

I don't want to hear of anyone carving a willow switch.

G.P.

Wonderful example of chip carving. I carve myself and can really appreciate the work and detail. Excellent job. What wood is this made out of?

Very nice design, John! Have you tried carving one yet? That would make a wonderful decorative item!

Gonna carve it this weekend. Got the idea out of chip carving book I had. As far as a paddle...LOL..from what I read they used to use these as washboards.

Looking forward to seeing how this turns out on wood! I love the pattern. I'm a fan of really baroque work. =)
