I have mirrored a feature in the software and would now like to work on the mirrored feature without effecting the original. Is there a way to do this?

Hello,

No, there is not. You'll need to do a copy/paste instead of using the mirror function.

just to add to micheals post

you can copy and past and then flip the object to get the same results that you will get when you mirror a pattern

Thanks... is there a way to connect mirrored lines into a carve region or a cut out?

Unfortunately no. In my opinion Mirror is one of the most useless tools in Designer. It is only useful if you want to mirror a pattern.
