Both of my computers at home and at work crash when I try to open the pattern editor in Designer 1.133 (build 7195). Both of these computers run XP. I get the Microsoft application close dialog reporting an error with gui.exe. Can anyone else confirm this?

Just downloaded version 1.133..... and yes, as soon as I "launch pattern editor" I get the dreaded "gui.exe has stopped working"...... I am running Windows Vista with latest service pack. I have yet to try any other functions at this time.

Lol thought it was just my computer. It took me forever to upload a project on the flashcard. Not to mention the designer crashing, haven't tried the pattern editor. Now hearing this I am afraid! The project came out fine, the CW worked well.

I have the same problem when launching version 1.133 - the Pattern Editor will not come up and the entire program crashes. I am back to version 1.32 for now.

I just spent about 10 minutes fooling with Editor and didn't have any problem. Running XP Professional.

Thanks for reporting the problem. It is really essential that you guys report what OS you are using as well. I just installed 1.133 on my Vista laptop and PE works just fine.

Some things I would try if you are having problems.

1) Download the file again, downloads can get corrupted sometimes.
2) Uninstall Designer and reinstall.
3) If you have hundreds of patterns in your pattern library, remove a lot of them. (It can cause you to have memory issues.)
4) Turn off hardware acceleration and/or increase the size of your rendering cache.

Remember to report a bug please the prefix "BUG" in your thread title and include as much information about your computer and OS as possible.

Hmmmm... tried the first 3 of your list 'o things to try.... still no go.

I am using Vista Home Premium SP1

I have gone back to 1.132 currrently and it works fine. (just checking...)

step 4 could use a tad more explanation, (understand concept, wanna know how)

thanx in advance Jeff

Guys,

I am experiencing the problem as well on each computer that I am using. (XP, Vista Home Premium, Vista Ultimate 64 bit). I have tried doing the uninstall and reinstall and have even tried setting the rendering cache. It's something further in depth. I am looking into the problem along with the engineers. When we find the cause and solution, we will let you know.

1. In your CarveWright Designer Software Go to Edit > Preferences and under Memory Cache settings change the number 256.

2. In your CarveWright Designer Software Go to Edit > Preferences > 3D Graphics and under Hardware Acceleration, select ‘Off’

I'm crashing as well, regardless of whether I click on "launch PE", or double click on one of my patterns to edit it.

Changed cache to 256 and then 512, acceleration to off.

Would one of you guys who are having problems with PE crashing want to try something? You need to be very comfortable with PC's and working with the registry as if you delete the wrong thing from your registry you could screw up your computer. You will also need your license file handy.

1) First uninstall Designer.

2) Then click on Start->Run and then type in 'regedit' and hit Enter.

3) You need to find the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->LHR TECHNOLOGIES

4) If you would be so kind as to right click on LHR TECHNOLOGIES and select 'Export' and save the file to your desktop that would be great, but it is not required.

5) Right click on LHR TECHNOLOGIES again and select 'Delete'.

6) Reinstall Designer.

NOTE: If you did export the old registry settings would you kindly place the file in a zip folder and email it to me (birt_j@soigeneris.com). I'll see the SW team gets them. It looks like some machine might have scrambled one of the registry settings during the upgrade. Doing the step above will let you start with a blank slate.

That didn't do it, Jeff.

I also changed the cache to 256mb and accelaration to off.

Jeff,

Wouldn't you want that registry entry "before" un-installing Designer 1.133?

Or would it be better to have it before and after?

I haven't installed 1.133 yet so I could send you both (before with 1.132 and after with 1.133) if it would help.

That is, if I have the crashing problem once upgraded.

Jeff -

Just finished the recommendation (except step 4 - it did list vers 1.131 and 1.132 with build info and values something like 0x000000)

unfortunately, same result (Vista Home Prem SP1, cashe=256, accel=off)

Chris, when you uninstall it won't delete the registry keys. This keeps all your settings in place if you ever need to reinstall.

Scott, CNS, thanks for trying.

I understand that Jeff. I thought you were interested in seeing if the settings had been changed (or scrambled in your words) by the 1.133 installation.

My mistake.

Right, but my thinking was that folks would only be going through the process if they had already installed the update and had problems. But I see what you are saying, one export before trying to install the update and one after to see what has changed.

It doesn't seem like it has helped anyone to delete the registry keys anyhow:(

I talked to one of the CW SW guys late late night and they have not been able to reproduce the problem, but they are still looking.

I have the PE lockup on Windows Pro XP/2, updated to 3, also with V 1.133,
I reinstalled back to V1.132.

I plan to make a new clean install of my Windows XP on another Hard Drive when I find time between cutting fire wood.

Version 1.132 has been working for me looks like V 1.133 not working on all OS's, needs an update.

I guess they are working on it, I tried to a system restore and it failed! Not sure if it was because of the update? At first my designer kept crashing and to load a project too almost 5 minutes. It was almost a 4 hour carve and carved just fine.

I just wonder what happens between the update to when we upgrade. I hope it is tested or we are the test!!!

133 Fails as soon as I start Pattern Editor. Removed 133 and installed 132. 132 seems to work ok.

Upgraded to 1.133 on 3/6/09 and had the same problem others are reporting. Today went through control panel and removed ver. 1.133, loaded 1.132 and did another upgrade. This time it worked ok. I did notice the file that I removed of ver. 1.133 was 129 MB, the new file that I installed was only 89 MB. Now I haven’t used my machine all winter, and very little last summer, and my files should not have been 40 MB. I thought I’d pass on a little positive about this issue.

Sorry forgot: Vista Ultimate 32 bit service pack 1; 2.8 GHZ Pentium D; 2 G Ram

Looked back on 1.132 and the file size was only 55.7 MB, I'll leave this mystery to the experts

Edit: Well it did work "Twice" then the dreaded gui.exe has stopped working, I will leave 1.132 on my MAC, and use it until this problem is corrected. The PC will also go back to 1.132.

I have a question.

Is it only the "Pattern Editor" that crashes for all of you or does Designer crash as well?

I don't really use the PE except for downloading scans and on occasion, opening a pattern I created in Designer so I can save it as a PNG to work on in PSP.

swhitney
03-14-2009, 10:58 PM
for me.... "all" else works (as far as I have tinkered), just upon opening PE do I get the immediate "gui.exe has stopped working"

I am still on 1.132 until further positive notice on update.

tried it also and, guess what? It crashed... Maybe some testing before the release would be the proper course of action. At this point I DO expect more. I guess thats why I still use 1.120 with confidence.
As a side note- This is the first software issue I have had with this also, from the demo(1.028) to 1.132.

I’m new to the forum but have had my machine for about six months. This error prompted me to search for help here. Someone mentioned going back to version 1.132 as a fix. I can’t find where you can choose which version to go back to in Win.XP. I can use Repair under Add/Remove Programs and get back to version 1.130 where the editor works, but many of my current projects were created in a more current version and will not open up under an older version. It forces me to update back to 1.133 again after I am done with the editor.

Can someone tell me/us, how to get back to 1.132 until 1.133 is fixed?

DAD:)

I just asked this same question yesterday in a different thread. Here's the response I got, and it worked out great:

Try this link.

Frank, You are my hero. Your link did allow me to update from 1.130 to 1.132 and I appear to be back in business. It would not allow me to go from 1.133 back to 1.132. I had to use repair again to get back to 1.130.
Thanks,
DAD

ya know....the real funny thing is: I got my scanner probe & software 5 days ago, updated my license, and I have yet to find anything remotely mentioning my Pattern Editor??? NOTHING in the help files, NOTHING in the software PDF download, and NOTHING here on the forums that I can find, as to where the heck it even is ,or what tab to click to open it so I can get the same error message everyone else is getting...LOL
...all I would like to know is: how do I open my Pattern Editor program?
thanx,

Go to the main website and look under the support tab. Look through the back issues of Tip&Tricks there are two whole issues devoted to it.

Please note: CarveWright is working on the fix for the 1.133 PE crash right now and I hear a proper help file for the PE.

It has been weeks now and 1.133 (7195) is still on the website to download as if there were no problem. This is a serious bug which requires the user to uninstall 1.133 and reinstall 1.132. I hate to think of how many users have had to needlessly go through this loop after the bug was reported weeks ago. 1.133 should have been pulled off of the upgrade site. (Or at least a warning for users of pattern editor should have been added.)

Had the same problem and I noticed this morning that they now have a new version 1.134 on the web site. I installed this new version and it works fine now.
