I am trying to make what I will call a shadow box out of a piece 11.25 x 11.25 x 3/4, route the edges and in that have a 10 by 10 carve area with a depth of 0.125. In that area i am trying to carve names and dates at 0.25 depth plus a smaller 3x5 area at this same depth. I started this project last night and it went right to the deepest carve depth inside the original carve area.........

If you'll post the mpc, I or someone else can take a look.

If you're trying to use centerline in the carve region, you'll have some problems.

Tell me if this is what you're looking for - if it is, I can tell you how I got there.

Is this close to what you want? If so, I made all of the smaller boxes the real depth I wanted (example .25+.125=.375).
I then made the carve region for the outer box .125 and set it for "Subtractive".

That's exactly what I did, Bud, but added some draft to the text, and assigned best to the various elements of the carve. There were two extra regions on the larger 3x5 that I eliminated, but the carve went directly to that 'cause there wasn't a carve region assigned to the 10x10.

I'm starting to catch up with you - woohoo!

appears to be what i want, but want to put glass over it that is why i thought i needed to go 0.125 on the 10 by 10 area and 0.25 on the rest

You can easily change any of the depth settings to suit.

Remember, if you hover the point of your mouses' arrow on any part of the project, the depth from the surface of the board shows in the lower left of your screen. The letters are all below the surface if you're putting glass over the top. If you're putting raster text inside a carve region, the letters will stand proud of the bottom of the region.

Your mpc didn't have a carve region at all on the 10x10 rectangle - that's ok if you want it that way, the text then would be below the surface of the board.

Make sense?

This was great, howevwer i tried to put a 1/4 in lip around it at0.125 in order to place a glass cover over itjust doesn't work for me , i seem to lose parts. Miy prob is in the depth settings i think

Remember to make your new higher box "Subtractive".

No - click on the shape on the left - "carvings" - you will see a brown shape to the right - that's the "merge" function. Click on it, select "subtractive", and watch the magic.

Here is the post that speaks to Subtractive:
http://forum.carvewright.com/showpost.php?p=82209&postcount=5
It is #5 on this thread.
I've also included an attachment to show you one way to set this carve area as Subtractive. I start with the "Lowest" carve area, in this case, as being "Normal" and each higher level is Subtractive.

If I were doing Pattern upon Pattern, I may be making each higher pattern Additive. Example Rider on a Horse: The rider may need to be Additive to show his/her legs around the horse.
