I am thinking about purchasing a carvewright. I want to copy a handgun grip that took me 14 hours to carve, it is rather complex and needs 2 sides carved. I was wondering if the scanner probe is capable of recreating this project?

My other question is....can a blank piece of wood be placed in a larger piece of wood that would act as a jig? Say a 8" x 10" jig board with a 2"x4" hole in the center to hold the work piece in place??

Thank You

PNAB,

Welcome to the Forum. Try this link for gun grips (http://forum.carvewright.com/showthread.php?t=8672&highlight=grip).

And YES you can use a jig, the April 2008 Tips & Tricks (http://www.carvewright.com/downloads/tips/CarveWrightTips&Tricks_Apr08.pdf)is about that.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

The machine is an amazing tool and I don't think you would regret the purchase if you are at all into woodworking and design project. Take a look through the forum, spend some time reading and ask many questions.

The scanning probe will scan items and you can manipulate them and yes it will certainly do a two sided carve. Or you could do two one sided carves and then attach them together.

Carrier boards are used in many applications for the machine. The link below takes you to the tips and tricks section of the forum and if you read through them, they will explain a lot about how to use the machine and how to use both the scanning probe and the carrier boards.

Many on here have already used the machine to make grips for hand guns and many of those patterns have been posted. If you do a search for them you will find them. The trick to the search feature is to put your search in quotes. "grips"

Good luck

Ok, after reading posts for the last month or so after returning from a second trip to Iraq its my time to ask....

Where is the best place to get clock parts, handles, lid holders and all those nice things needed?

Thanks

Mike

You know I have to say this but Woodcraft is a great place to get all those supplies, if there is one near you. What they don't have in stock they can order for you, get it into the store and you don't pay shipping. Just my opinion.

I too am new to the CW. So new mine has not arrived yet. Next Tuesday is the big day!

After reading through the forums and seeing the pistol grips area I had the thought that the CW could be used to carve designs into a gun stock. I am driving to Dixie Gun Works tomorrow and am buying a Prairie Rifle kit and thought that maybe I could build a special carrier for the stock and be able to carve some designs into the stock. Would this be possible?

This is not why I bought the CW but thought it might be a future application.

Thanks,

Whoops...

Try this one, then do a few searches (I searched "gun stock" with the quote marks to get this one)

Thanks Jerry.
The CW is on its way with the extra bit set. Looks like I'll need the scanner pretty soon and will be building a couple of sleds.
