Litho with a twist
I finally got around to working on my first lithophane. I used white 1/4 corian and cut it .206" deep. Left the height at 100 so it has plenty of contrast. I liked the back-lit looks, but didn't care for it when it was not lit (carved from the front and showed the peaks and valleys in the carving - it's a personal thing).
Then I came up with an idea on how to "fill" the carved area without losing the lithophane effect - I filled it with casting acrylic.
Photo 1 is the back-lit litho as it was originally cut.
Photo 2 is the front view, when not lit.
Photo 3 is me pouring the liquid casting acrylic. (Yellowish cast goes away as it cures.)
Photo 4 is the filled, cured front view when not lit.
Photo 5 is the final, back-lit.
The final photo is not quite as sharp as the first, but that is my less-than-steady hand. The finished product really is as good as the original.
Don't know that anyone else will find this interesting or useful, but thought you should have the opportunity to decide for yourself.
