I haven't loaded the Pattern Editor on my computer yet so I can't speak about it, but the only way to get a vector graphic into designer ( and I would assume - the pattern editor ) is to convert it to jpg or png. The latter being the preferred format, I think.
There is a very interesting "tips and tricks" available for download which explains how you can "fool" the software into treating some graphics as vector carvings ( like the Centerline Text is engraved ) if you use images as "fonts". It's one of the more interesting things I've read and while I haven't touched on it yet because of lack of time, it's on my list of top things to work on.
