    Default Knot another one...

I spent a little time cleaning up a celtic knot I really like from a clipart book and did a couple versions. The stained one is a straight raster carved at the lowest quality...the second has some draft applied and was carved on normal (Thanks Jason for the tip).
I've been playing with different stains on one project. This has some dark walnut around the outer ring, and a "flame mahogany" in the center..the outer edge and top is just shellac.

Man this machine is a blast.

Great staining job on the celtic knot! Bet it was really time consuming.

That's really a nice looking piece. Would you mind sharing a few pointers on how you created it? For example, what type of wood did you use, how did you mask the two stains, what varnish did you use? I'd like to try a piece like that but I don't think mine would turn out as well as yours!

    Thanks.

Thanks everyone. I gotta tell you this machine really does all the work!
The knot is from a book called:
    Celtic Borders & Decoration.
    By: Courtney Davis.
I have to warn you that if you run out and get the book, be aware that I had to spend about an hour modifying the knot I liked in a graphics application to make it "useable" on the machine. I basically turned his beautiful art into a simpler version that I vectored by hand.

As for the stains...this has really been a fun area to play in. I don't do any masking. I just flooded the wood with a reddish stain..then quickly wiped it from the high areas (the knot). I then later carefully brushed in some dark walnut stain on the outer perimeter (the outer circle edge) for highlight. Lastly, I used a light stain (pecan) for the knot...once it was dry I hit it with shellac.
    Then I had a beer.
