Default Bearing Failure in Cutter Head

Just when everything was going so good.

The lower bearings in the cutter head of the Z truck disintegrated which in turn caused the flex cable to snap.

Is this a replace the bearings or replace the Z truck situation?

So we are talking the actual Spindle Bearing correct? The lower bearing of the spinning bit... If this is the case, I would opt for a replacement truck as if you have a CT Chuck it better to let LHR press the bearing in rather than tapping it with a hammer and socket... Possibly damaging it...

I have never heard of a spindle bearing going out.... I bet LHR would be interested in seeing this....

Just my 2 cents.... The lower bearing had in the old QC Days a lower bearing Damper.... A Corrugated piece of metal that was pressed in around the outside of the lower bearing and inside the truck. I had them POP OUT years ago..... Don't know if the CT has one???

I have heard of a lower spindle bearing going before. Pretty rare I think. It can be replaced. NSK 6002VV

It might help if you see the "spindle puller" thread.

I took the trucks off a couple of days ago to replace the Y & Z bearings and Y belt. This is the first time I had taken them off. I saw a bunch of pitch built up on the bottom of the spindle and cleaned it off with WD40. I took off the top hat and there was grease that had migrated from the flex core and I cleaned it too. I ran a three hour carve yesterday and it ran like a champ.

Today I was running a project and it had been running fine. I had gone out of the shop but could here the machine running . I heard it start to make a howling noise and when I got to it, it seized and snapped the flex cable on the motor end.

You can see the base of the seal in the picture (brown) .

If you have a little mechanical know how, you can remove the spindle and replace the bearings. It is not a procedure LHR recommends but many of us have done it.

I have a four pound sledge hammer and an anvil!
It showed the Z-Truck assembly "unavailable" on the Carvewright web site.
I will strive to be the first voice they hear Monday morning to see what I can get done.

    I have never done it...

Another option is to get a RMA Number from LHR if they use them and offer to send it back to be rebuilt. Then send it back to you....

    Or use the big hammer....

Curious if the CT has the Damper metal ring?

Any chance using the WD-40 caused the failure? Or what caused the failure?

The CT has exactly the same bearing setup as the QC. Tolerance rings around each bearing and wave washer under the top bearing.

I think I should have left the pitch build up and grease on it alone.
