    Default chip carving frame

Here is a chip carved pic frame I have been messing around with. I tried to upload both the ptn and MPC both were too large so I put them on my website www.carvemore.com under the free models page #5. Just need to add a carve region in the back for the picture.

Question is it better to cut with the grain or cross grain?

I did this with the grain to prevent tear out.
I don't know about the best way to cut it as far as the machine is concerned but from an asthetic perspective, the way you have it is best. In my opinion.

    Default chip carved plate

Here is a plate I made tonight...man I forgot how much fun making patterns is.
The file again is too large and I am too lazy to upload to my website so I included the rendered image in greyscale.

No problem I have been a chip carving thing...LOL...they carve pretty well. I import them after I make them with the stil converter. There seems to be a thing w the stl conveter even though my model is .75 the pattern comes in at like .7499...meaning when carving instead of only carving the recessed areas it does the whole thing...stl glitch...it would be a much faster carve if it came in at true .75. To put a carve region on the surfaces area to trick it too much work...LOL

    Hi John!

Very nice pattern! Did you create the plate using Z-Brush?

    Michael,

    Thanks

No both we actually done using Moi and 3d max..zbrush most definitly an organic modeller/sculpting...hard to get exact measurements etc

Thanks, John. I sort of figured it wasn't a Z-Brush creation, but I've seen some amazing "hard edge" models done and thought you may have discovered some sort of 'secret' method for your chip carve designs!

Yes, Z-brush is fun, but I have never taken the time to figure out how to create items that need to conform to specific measurements, so gave up using it as a regular tool for most of my pattern and project designs (my preference being Aspire and/or ArtCAM for the most part). Still, Z-Brush is an amazing program in capable hands! You have created several very nice models with it!
