    Default Rare Earth Magnet Question

Like a lot of other folks, I have lots of signs I've made that I'd like to display in the shop.

My shop is metal skinned, so two or four earth magnets on the back of the signs would allow them to be displayed pretty well.

I'm looking at some on EBAY, like these:

My question is, how do I know the holding weight of these things? I'm sure they'd hold a small 8x12 sign made out of cedar, but how big of a carving can I count on them holding?

Im not sure "holding power" is your only concern. I use those magnets a lot, and there is plenty of "attraction" power to stop a sign from "falling" off... however, I have had to add foam or rubber to some signs to give the sign some friction.. otherwise there isnt anything to keep it from sliding down a metal surface. It wont fall of... but without enough friction, they can slide fairly easily.

I've used them on a few projects like that, I get them at Hobby Lobby cost about $3 for 10. I just start with about 4 and add more if it feels like they are needed to hold the piece. 4-6 will hold several pounds.

    Hi Jerry,

Here is a link to a website that has every magnet known to man! They give very detailed specs on each magnet they sell. I believe the "holding weight" is actually called "pull force" in their specifications.

I bought some .030 thick Industrial SHEET Magnet with Sticky on one side for my Fire Tags. Strips of that on the back of your stuff would work...

Here is my source of rare earth magnets. http://www.rare-earth-magnets.com/

The site has a lot of information about magnets and the amount of pull force.
