Thread: Decorative pieces for baby crib

  1. Default Decorative pieces for baby crib

Working on a solid cherry crib / toddler bed / twin bed set, decided the front posts on the footboard needed something..

3 hrs on the CW and I am happy with the results gives it just the extra I was looking for.

Liking this machine more every day...

Very nice project. Is there any hidden joinery, and if so , did you do it on the CW?

Lovely work-- I'm impressed by it all but especially the finish. I can never seem to get cherry to finish so nicely... even with a 1lb shellac basecoat I get blotching. Would you mind sharing your finishing formula-including how you aged it so nicely?

    Again, beautiful work

Hey all... thanks for the comments I'll try to answer the questions..

The joints / construction are all conventional table saw / pocket screw / biscuit joiner style. This is going to be a convertable crib / toddler bed / twin bed so all the major pieces are held together using treaded inserts. I'm going to CW some rosettes or decorative letters to cover the bolt heads on the front probably will just drill a recess on the back and glue a magnet in place to hold it on.

The finish.. Many years ago I did quite a bit of work in cherry, this is the first since then. The best advice I have for finishing is to not over sand it. I sand to 120 by hand so I can get a good feel for how consistent and even the surface is, then I brush on a heavy coat of stain (red oak in this case) and leave it on for at least 30 minutes. Next take a clean rag that is just damp with stain and start to work / rub it out to an even color. Next it will get a very light coat of clear shellac, steel wool and a final semigloss poly.

To age the carving I used a mahogany gel stain applied to the high spots with a small foam brush then blotted off with a clean rag letting the recesses / deeper carves stay darker for contrast, then used the red oak stain just like the rest of the piece.

Heres a matching piece to the crib.. Combination dresser changing table, also in cherry with the same CW carved trim pieces.
