    Default Finished Boxes

Here are my two finished Boxes. Both in poplar, cherry stain and spray lacquer finish. My wife painted the hummingbird and flower with acrylic paint. I plan on felting the inside of the hummingbird box.

Aside from putting text on the inside of the lid, I have two other tricks I used on this project that might be helpful to some:

It's hard to clamp the two rings together without them sliding while putting the clamps on - my answer was to put glue on the two halves, and set them on the drill press, line them up and set a scrap of board slightly larger than the box on top and then use the drill press for a clamp, locking it into position. Yeah, they probably told me not to do that in shop class.

The other part was sanding the inside of the box. Again, I used my drill press, chucked in one of those 1 1/2" diameter drum sander on an arbor units, adjusted the table and locked the chuck so the sanding drum just cleared the bottom of the box. Turn it on slow speed and sand away, came out real smooth and straight.

I also had a problem setting up the second box. The board was only 7.2 inches so I was forced to scale the project or quit. Fortunately I was able to reset the board enough where it was a bit wider and the machine let me run it.

    very nice brdad.

I tried carving a box, but operator errors scrapped that project. Firstly it cut out the back OK, flipped and started to drill and snapped 1/8th in bit, I suspect the bit was worn out. So I taped over the carving, removed it and the cut out on the back using designer, then re-ran the project, drilled out fine, then went to cut out the top and the masking tape wrapped around the bit. I stopped the machine and found the bit worked loose and QC is now damaged.
Oh well, got to call LHR now and order new one's.

Again this was nothing due to the MPC from Michael, which I greatly appreciate him giving away for free. Thanks
If it doesn't fit force it. If it breaks then it needed replacing anyway.

Thanks for the comments. I already have someone asking how much to have a few personalized ones made for gifts! I know it depends on the market, but does $35-$40 seem a like a good ballpark for one finished and personalized like the rose one, or is that a bit much?

That price is more than fair!

    nice looking boxes brdad.
When I make mine ,I think I'll use my 25 yr. old Ringmaster to cut the rings instead of risking a $40.00 bit. There seems to be a lot of breakage of those bits.

Well finally got feeling well enough to go to the shop and do a carve. I think this box is going to look fantastic once I complete it. Did mine out of rough Cedar.

Think I will send it to my granddaughter in FL to fill when she is in and out of CF hospital

    Thanks Micheal
