In answer to many questions, i used maple for the piece i made and used a dark amber shellac, hence the colour

same applies, stain the surface and then shellac,carve, paint and wipe off..

all, i was using a Rigid shop vac, with a high end filter and i reckon i was getting 80% to 90% of it out. just run a 5 hour carve and had a handful of detritus left...
