View Full Version : Problem with this plaque

I have carved out this plaque twice. (With names on it.) The problem I'm having is that the side closest to the keypad is not coming out with a clean cut.

It's not cut all the way through, but the other side and the ends are fine. I have to take it off the machine and give it a quick cleanup on the circular saw to take off what is left.

Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong please?

it's probably too close to the tracking wheel. How big of a board are you cutting this out of?

It is a 1 x 4 and it is the edge over the tracking wheel.

probably the safety feature which keeps the bit from cutting in to the tracking wheel.

you need to be a half inch from the tracking wheel with all cuts. If you move your design to the bottom of a 1X4 virtual board, you should have plenty of room to clear it

Do you mean like this? Will this require a sled?

that should work without a sled (as long as you have extra wood on the ends to stay under the rollers

Shakey,

This will work w/ the extra Like mentioned. But if your going to reproduce it a few times, a sled will save you wood. Did a bit of tweeking, hope you can get the basic stock size in the type you need. This will reproduce in a sled well. (Do a few like this myself :)) Hope this works for ya. Neat design.

Sorry for being dense. But just so I understand. Does this mean that my board actually needs to be 4" wide? Meaning I can't use an actual 1 x 4 which measures 3.75" wide.

If I am understanding this right, the only way I can use a 1 x 4 is with a sled?

For this particular design, yes. The cut path goes all the way to the edge. It would cut into your tracking roller. You need an extra about 3/4" top and bottom and 3.5" at each end so not to damage your machine.

Actually, you only need the 3/4 on the top and I some people have done 1/2" with no trouble

From the Dec 2007 Tips and Tricks:

If a project has a cutpath very close to
the ends of the "virtual" Designer board,
you will get a false error message, warning
you about possible interference with the
aux roller and asking if you want to
Manual Jig or Auto-Jig when you are
uploading the project to your memory
card. You should click "Ignore" and DO
NOT select Manual nor Auto-Jig. A
minimum 1/2" clearance on the top of the
board is the only area you need clearance
on for a cutpath. You do NOT need any
cutpath clearance at the bottom or sides of
the board at all. The bit cannot hit anything
at those edges when performing a cutout,
so you are perfectly safe. This assumes
your actual board will have the extra 7"
length and that you select "center on
length" when you do the project setup at
the machine.
