What tutoral will show me how to get more definition in a pattern to cut. I bought a corner and a rosette, when I used them, the definition was really bad, and was not sharp or complete. I know I need to set something but don't know what.

I would say to start with the Tips & Tricks Issue # 15 - December 2008.

It will show Layering. Actually, you may just need to set the "Depth" of the carve and then also set the "height" to something close to 990. The patterns have a pre-set depth, but you may change that and raising the Height will add detail perspective in most cases. A height of 999 should bring the highest features back to the surface of the board, that is why I stay just below that (sometimes not going higher than 950, in case the board is not exactly flat).

My signature, below, has lots of valuable links on carving.

When I am running a pattern, I notice there is an option to abort the carve. Can I partially run a practice piece to check my cuts and depth, then abort to do the finish piece, without hurting the machine?

Yes, if you abort the carve part way through, your CC/CW will just reset it's head back to the starting position. The only thing that will happen is your system will return to the starting position. If all looks good, you can restart the carve again, and your CC/CW will "air carve" over the part it had done already, and you wont waste your board. In fact, to pause your CC/CW while it's in operation (to clean, or whatever) while it's in the process of a carve, it's recommended to hit the stop key on the keypad ONCE, which will pause it, but if you accedentally hit it (the stop key) twice, it'll abort the carve completely, and go back to it's "starting position"...

I seem to remember some words a while back about converting line art ( Clip Art Drawings ) to a font file in order to carve them.

Could be my imagination but i thought I'd give it a try

Thanks in advance
